Transforming your smile can be a huge undertaking. And while we have the technical skills, experience and understanding of aesthetics to perform a smile makeover, your input is just as necessary to achieve a satisfying result.

Your part really has to do with expectations — what do you see when you look in the mirror — and what do you want to change?

Here are 3 questions to help guide you in shaping your expectations for that new, beautiful smile.

What do you dislike about your teeth? This is really about specifics and not just a general feeling of dissatisfaction. Are your teeth misshapen, chipped or missing? Are they discolored or stained? Is the spacing off or do you have a poor bite (malocclusion)? Getting a sense of what you perceive as unattractive will help us formulate a plan to improve the appearance of those problem areas.

Are you concerned with how much your gums show when you smile? Your teeth may be perfect, but if your gums seem to steal the spotlight when you smile (known as a “gummy” smile), you may need some remedy like veneers, crowns or even corrective surgery. Which procedure depends on whether the crowns of your teeth are too short in proportion to the gums, or the muscles in your upper lip are allowing the lip to rise too high when you smile. A dental examination will tell all.

Do you want a “Hollywood Smile” — or just a more attractive, natural you? Smile makeovers aren’t just about clinical alterations — it’s just as much about your personal perceptions of beauty. Some patients want the perfectly shaped, aligned and dazzlingly white smile that’s the epitome of Hollywood. Others want only to enhance their smile, perhaps even keeping a few unique imperfections they’re comfortable with. It’s important to know which person you are, and to communicate that with us when we’re putting together your makeover plan.

Changing your smile is a big step in your life. You can help make the process more satisfying and successful if you understand what you want to change — and why.

In summer, there is no shortage of occasions to show off your smile. Whether attending a wedding, graduation celebration, family reunion or neighborhood barbecue, you’ll want to look your best. But if your smile doesn’t shine as brightly as you’d like, a trip to the dental office may just be the confidence-booster you’re looking for. Here are some popular techniques to enhance your smile:

Teeth cleaning. A professional cleaning can make your mouth feel fresh and add sparkle to your smile. The dental hygienist uses special tools to get rid of plaque and tartar that you cannot remove during your oral hygiene routine at home. In addition, hygienists use a tooth-polishing tool that removes surface stains.

Professional whitening. Professional teeth whitening can achieve excellent results in one short office visit. But if you have several weeks before the big event on your calendar, you can also get winning results at home using custom-made whitening trays from the dental office. Either way, your smile can sparkle at summer celebrations.

Cosmetic bonding. If your teeth have small chips or cracks, cosmetic bonding may be a good option for you. In bonding, tooth-colored material is shaped to the tooth and hardened with a curing light. The procedure—generally done in one office visit without anesthesia—is relatively inexpensive, and the result is very natural-looking.

Porcelain veneers. If you are unhappy with the color, shape, size or spacing of your teeth, long-lasting dental veneers can give your smile a whole new look. Veneers are wafer-thin porcelain shells that are bonded to the tooth’s surface. Because they may be crafted in a dental lab, they may require two to three visits to the dental office over a few-week period.

With so many options, it’s easy to put your best smile forward at all your summer gatherings. We can help. If you have any questions about brightening your smile, please contact our office or schedule a consultation. Discover the many cosmetic issues that dental veneers can greatly improve.veneers

There is a reason so many people are turning to our Chandler, AZ, dentist Dr. Grant Johansen for porcelain veneers. These cosmetic restorations are an easy and minimally invasive way to improve the appearance of your smile. If you are looking to get a smile that’s perfect, then it might be time to talk to your dentist about veneers.

What are dental veneers?

These thin tooth-colored shells are designed to cover the entire front surface of your teeth to alter the shape, size, color or alignment of your smile. Imagine being able to finally have your ideal smile. Porcelain veneers can mask a variety of dental issues including:

  • Severe stains and discolorations
  • Cracks, chips or fractures
  • Misshapen or malformed teeth
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Minor overlapping or crowding

Just by getting dental veneers you can easily enhance your appearance and give you the self-esteem boost you deserve. Why are so many people turning to porcelain veneers?

  • They are designed to look just like natural tooth enamel. The porcelain even mimics the way enamel reflects light so the only person who will know that you have veneers is you.
  • While these veneers look ultra-thin, they are still very strong and can last several years before needing to be replaced.
  • Porcelain veneers are also stain resistant, which means that they will remain brilliant and white.
  • This is a more conservative way to improve and enhance your smile because we only have to remove trace amounts of enamel from the front of your teeth to make room for your veneers.

Once we deem you the ideal candidate for veneers it will only take two visits to the office to get your brand new smile. So, don’t you owe it to yourself to finally have the smile you’ve always wanted? We think so. If you are ready to learn more about dental veneers then it’s a good time to schedule an appointment with your dentist Dr. Grant Johansen at Johansen Dental in Chandler, AZ.

As a member of the best-selling pop group Spice Girls, Mel C (AKA Sporty Spice) enjoyed her share of musical superstardom. At the band’s peak in the Nineties, the young singer’s signature look featured baggy sweatpants, an assortment of tattoos, a nose stud and a gold-capped incisor, front and center in her mouth. Today, Melanie Chisholm is still singing — but now she’s a mom, an amateur triathlete… and that gold tooth is just a memory. Not only that, her smile looks more evenly spaced and whiter than it did when she was referred to as the “tomboy” of the group.

What happened? In our view, it all boils down to changing tastes — plus a little bit of help from dental professionals. As the “wannabe” singer proves, there’s no single standard when it comes to making your teeth look their best. Your own look is unique to you — and your smile can reflect that individuality.

For example, crowns (caps) are substantial coverings that may be placed on teeth when they are being restored. They are available in three types: gold, all-porcelain, or porcelain-fused-to-metal. The latter two are tooth-colored, while the gold is — well, shiny like gold bling. Which one is right for you? In many cases, it’s your choice.

Likewise, dental veneers — wafer-thin shells that can correct cosmetic issues by covering the surface of your teeth — can be made in a variety of shades. Their hues may range from natural ivory to Hollywood white, and everything in between. What’s the best color for you? Only you can say.

Some people opt for a “smile makeover” that uses small irregularities in the spacing and color of teeth to create a more “natural” look. Other folks want a perfectly even, brilliant white smile that dazzles the eye. Still others are looking to match or restore the smile they once had — perhaps even re-creating a signature gap between the teeth. As long as there are no other dental issues involved, the choice is yours.

So if you’re unhappy with your smile — or if you feel it doesn’t reflect the person you “wannabe” — why not talk to us about a smile makeover? Just call our office to schedule a consultation. You can learn more about this topic in the Dear Doctor magazine articles “Beautiful Smiles by Design” and “The Impact of a Smile Makeover.”

Could this easy, fast and completely non-invasive dentistry technique improve the shape of your teeth?dental bonding

A lot of people don’t actually get cosmetic dentistry let alone consider it because they think it’s too expensive or requires invasive techniques. Drs. Kent and Grant Johansen in Chandler, AZ, are here to tell you about one cosmetic treatment that is completely non-invasive and also one of the most inexpensive options out there for improving your smile. We’ll leave you wondering why you didn’t consider dental bonding sooner.

What is dental bonding?

Bonding is a great cosmetic option for someone who is looking to address minor cosmetic issues with their smile. Perhaps you want to lengthen one or more teeth to get a more even smile. Perhaps you want to cover discolorations, cracks or chips. Maybe you just want to fill that small gap between their teeth. Bonding can do all this and more.

Will people be able to tell that I got dental bonding?

Most people worry that any kind of dental work will be obvious to those around them. Our Chandler cosmetic dentists are here to tell you that our job is to match the composite resin that we use to the natural shade of your tooth. This type of material is easy to match to your smile and comes in many different shades. Plus, the resin is completely and easily moldable, so once the material is applied we can easily shape it to your exact needs.

Is bonding painful?

Most people worry that any kind of dental work that they get will hurt. Bonding is by far the easiest and most painless cosmetic option out there. Plus, it’s very budget-friendly. All we have to do is apply the tooth-colored resin over the tooth, mold and shape it into place, and then harden it by shining a dental laser over the tooth. We won’t even need to numb the tooth beforehand. You’ll feel completely comfortable the entire time and won’t believe how easy it is. Even children can benefit from bonding.

Johansen Dental in Chandler, AZ, is ready to help give you the smile you wanted but always thought was out of reach. Your dental dreams are about to become a reality. Call us today to find out if dental bonding is the best approach to getting the results you want.
