It’s time to do more than just dream of having the perfect smile.
You can have a straighter and all-around more radiant set of pearly whites thanks to our Chandler, AZ, cosmetic dentist Dr. Grant Johansen. We offer a full range of cosmetic services to meet your treatment goals, and one way to get that perfect smile is through a simple restoration known as a dental veneer.
What is a dental veneer?
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain that is bonded to the front surface of a tooth to improve the tooth’s shape, size, color and texture. Veneers can be made from different tooth-colored materials but porcelain tends to be the most commonly used material because it looks just like real tooth enamel. It even reflects light in much the same way as natural teeth, so no one will be able to tell which tooth has a veneer and which ones don’t.
When are veneers used?
Veneers are a cosmetic treatment so they aren’t used to fix a damaged or weak tooth (in the case of a damaged tooth, a dental crown would be a better option); however, veneers can drastically improve the overall look of your smile. These porcelain restorations are great at hiding a variety of cosmetic flaws such as:
- Discolorations and stains
- Chips and cracks
- Gaps between teeth
- Minor crowding or crookedness
- Worn teeth (often from teeth grinding)
- Misshapen teeth
If you are dealing with some cosmetic problem that is causing your smile to be less than perfect then veneers might just be a simple yet effective solution to get back the smile you want. From covering flaws and defects to actually improving the alignment of your smile, veneers can do quite a bit to alter and enhance your appearance (not to mention, your self-esteem).
How are veneers placed?
In order to get veneers, we will first need to prepare your teeth for veneers. Tooth preparation is very minimal but it does need to be done to make room for your new restorations. Veneers are extremely thin, so your Chandler, AZ, dentist will only need to shave about 0.5mm of enamel off the front of your tooth so veneers can be applied. While this is completely painless it is important to note that this is not a reversible treatment.
Since veneers are custom-made to cover your teeth and every tooth is different, we will also need to take impressions of your smile. These impressions are then sent to a dental lab so they can start crafting your custom-made veneers. While your veneers are being made we may place temporary veneers over your teeth to protect them.
The last trip to our dental office will involve checking the look and fit of your veneers before permanently bonding them to the front of your teeth using a special resin and a dental light to harden the resin in place.
Dental veneers have helped countless patients experience a cosmetic transformation and you could be next. To find out if you are a perfect candidate for veneers call Johansen Dental in Chandler, AZ, today.
